Anti-Emetics

Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine)

  • 50mg PO/IM/IV q4h
  • indicated for N/V associated with motion sickness

 

Dronabinol (Marinol)

  • 2.5mg PO bid before lunch and dinner
  • Indicated for N/V associated with chemotherapy

 

Granisetron (Kytril)

  • 10 mcg/kg IV 30 min before chemo, 1mg PO bid
  • indicated for N/V associated with chemotherapy

 

Ondansetron (Zofran)

  • single 32mg (infused over 15 minutes)
  • three 0.15 mg/kg IV doses
  • 8-10mg PO bid [4, 8, solution 4mg/5ml]
  • indicated for N/V associated with chemotherapy

 

Prochlorperazine (Compazine)

  • 5-10mg PO/IM tid/qid
  • 2.5-10mg slow (5mg/min) IV - single dose not to exceed 10mg
  • supp 25mg bid
  • maximum daily dose 40mg
  • also effective for short term treatment of non-psychotic anxiety

 

Promethazine (Phenergan)

  • 25-50mg PO/IM/PR q4-6h
  • Peds 0.25 - 0.5mg/kg PO/IM/PR q4-6h
  • indicated for
    • post-op N/V associated with anesthesia
    • motion sickness
    • adjuct to analgesics for control of post-op pain (potentiates Demerol)
    • effective for allergic conditions

 

Scopolamine (TransdermScop)

  • one circular patch applied to the postauricular area
  • takes 4 hrs to become effective and lasts for 3 days
  • indicated for N/V associated with motion sickness
  • wash hands after handing - causes dilation of pupils and blurred vision if comes in contact with the eyes

 

Thiethylperazine (Torecan, Norzine)

  • 10-30mg qd-tid
  • 2ml IM qd-tid

 

Trimethobenzamide (Tigan)

  • 250mg PO tid/qid
  • Peds 100mg PO tid/qid
  • Supp 200mg tid/qid - Peds 100mg tid/qid
